Live Oak, Oregon (AP) Tesla has announced a new solar panel material that will replace conventional plastic roofs, but the company isn’t ready to sell the product to homeowners yet.
The company announced Tuesday that it had partnered with Portland-based company RNC Live Oak to bring its solar roof to homes and businesses in Oregon.
The new material, which will be available by the end of the year, is a lightweight composite of glass and silicon and will be manufactured at the company’s Fremont factory.
The material has been tested by thousands of customers around the country, and is expected to be available for sale sometime in 2018.
The company said it expects to have more than 300,000 panels available for purchase in the next six months.
Tesla, which has been developing solar-powered roofs since 2012, says the new material will reduce the weight of the roof by up to 35 percent, as well as provide more insulation.
